Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Leontios 8 was bishop of Linoe in Bithynia; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Λεοντίου ἐπισκόπου Λινόης: Mansi XII 998. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Λέοντος ἐπισκόπου Λινόης: Mansi XIII 369. Elsewhere he is styled Λέων ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Λινόης or similar: Mansi XII 1103, XIII 145 (the Latin versions of both passages, at XII 1104 and XIII 146, also give him the name Leo). It is not certain whether his name was Leo or Leontios. At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1): Mansi XII 1103. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 145. His name is missing from the list of those who subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council at the seventh session, possibly in error, since he was present at the session.
