Leo 265, also called Madiam, was once a logothetes and later, following encouragement from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), became a monk; he was the addressee of four letters from Photios 1, of uncertain date (between 859 and 886): Photius, Epp. 44 (addressed Λέοντι γεγονότι λογοθέτῃ τῷ Μαδιάμ), 45 (addressed τῷ αὐτῷ), 59 (addressed Λέοντι λογοθέτῃ τῷ Μαδιάμ), 82 (addressed Λέοντι λογοθέτῃ γεγονότι καὶ μονάσαντι, ὑπὸ δοκοῦντος φίλου παραλυπηθέντι) (I 91ff., 105, 122 Laourdas-Westerink) (and cf. Anonymus 610). He had expressed the wish to follow the life of a monk and received encouragement from Photius (Photios 1) and help with questions of faith: Photius, Epp. 44, 45. By the date of Ep. 82 he had become a monk. The address of Ep. 59 suggests that it was written before the others, when Leo 265 was still logothetes, but this may be misleading and γεγονότι should perhaps be understood in the text.
