Leo 189 was a hypatos and basilikos spatharios; owner of two similar seals dateable to the seventh or eighth century, possibly the eighth: Zacos and Veglery 3137, Gray Birch, BMSeals 17673. Both seals read: Λέοντι ὑπάτῳ καὶ βασιλικῷ σπαθαρίῳ. Zacos and Veglery date their seal to the eighth century; Seibt (in Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 33) dates the Gray Birch seal to the seventh or eighth century.
