Leo 119, also called Katakalos, was a relative (γαμβρῷ) of Photios 1; he was appointed droungarios of the Vigla by Photios 1 (presumably meaning "through his influence") and, allegedly in return, he persecuted supporters of Ignatios 1 with great cruelty; described as very cruel: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 569D-572A ((τῷ ὠμοτάτῳ πάντων ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἀπηνεστάτῳ ... γαμβρῷ - Λέων δὲ οὗτος ἢν ὁ καλούμενος Κατάκαλος, τῆς βιγλᾶς δρουγγάριος ὑπ' αὐτοῦ προβιβασθείς).
