An iconoclast, Leo 117 was made bishop of Lesbos during the reign of the emperor Leo V (Leo 15); during the reign of the emperor Michael II (Michael 10) he grew jealous of the reputation of Symeon the Stylite (Symeon 13) and brought charges against him before the patriarch Theodotos 2 which led to Symeon 13's banishment; he plundered the property of the Orthodox (the iconophiles) and banished the holy man Georgios 135 to Myrsine (in Lesbos): Acta Davidis, Symeonis et Georgii 15 (227, 4ff., 20ff.), 16 (229, 13ff., 230, 2ff.), 17 (230, 24-231, 5), 25 (241, 24-35).
