Leo 83 was archbishop of Nikopolis (Nikopolis in Epirus and Nikopolis ad Istrum in Thrace both had archbishops; it is uncertain which of the two was his see); owner of a seal dateable to the ninth century: DOSeals II 2.12 = Laurent, Corpus V 1, 670 (= Mushmov, "Sceaux de plomb", no. 31, corrected by F. Dölger, BZ 36, pp. 268-269 and Banescu, review, p. 726, and see also Likhachev, Molivdovuly, 81, pl. LXI, no. 4). Obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with the legend τῷ σῷ δούλῳ. Rev.: +Λέοντ[ι] - ἀρχιεπις - κ[όπῳ] Νικοπόλ - {ολ}[εωσ]. ἀμῆν. Laurent, op. cit., p. 505, note (and cf. Banescu, loc. cit.) prefers Nikopolis in Epirus on balance as the more likely.
