Krateros 1 was a strategos of the Kibyrrhaiotai during the reign of Michael II (Michael 10); when the Arabs under Abu Hafs 1 occupied Crete, the emperor Michael 10 sent Krateros 1 to the island with all the ships he could collect; he gathered seventy biremes (Theoph. Cont., Genesius) or two hundred ships (Ps.-Symeon) and he is said to have gained the upper hand, defeating the Arabs in a battle, but his troops failed to press home their advantage when night fell and instead relaxed and began to celebrate; they were then massacred in a surprise night attack; Krateros 1 escaped by merchant ship but the Arab chief sent ships in pursuit and he was overtaken at Kos, captured and killed: Theoph. Cont. XV 24. 17-20, Genesius II 12 (Κρατερῷ τῷ στρατηγέτῃ Κιβυρραιωτῶν). Cf. Photeinos 9.
