Konstantinos 39 was called Toxaras (Κωνσταντῖνος ὁ Τοξαρᾶς): Leo Gramm. 244, 251, 254, Georg. Mon. Cont. 830, 837, 840, Ps.-Symeon 678, 688. He went on the expedition of 866 against Crete and was involved with Basilios 7 in the plot to kill Bardas 5; he informed Basilios 7 of the arrival of Bardas at the emperor's tent on the fatal morning: Leo Gramm. 244, Georg. Mon. Cont. 830, Ps.-Symeon 678. See Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, pp. 87ff., 92, 174, 199. The date of the murder was 21 April 866 (indiction 14): Theoph. Cont. V 17, p. 238. He later conspired with Basil I (Basilios 7) to murder the emperor Michael III (Micahel 11) and was one of those who mounted a watch outside the imperial bedchamber during the assassination: Leo Gramm. 251, Georg. Mon. Cont. 837, cf. Ps.-Symeon 685 (not named). The date was 23 September 867. He was subsequently assassinated himself in Kibyrrhaiotai: Leo Gramm. 254, Georg. Mon. Cont. 840, Ps.-Symeon 688.
