Karoulos 3 was the son of Charlemagne (Karoulos 1); he was anointed king by pope Leo III (Leo 11) on Christmas Day, 25 December 800, in St Peter's at Rome, after the coronation of Karoulos 1 himself: Lib. Pont. 98. 24.
