Ioseph 9 was protospatharios, kandidatos and kommerkiarios of Thessalonike (but see below); owner of a seal dateable to the ninth or tenth century: Sorlin-Dorigny, "Sceaux et bulles", p. 86 (= Schlumberger, Sig., p. 105 with n. 1). Obv.: no description given. Rev.: Ιωσεφ - Α' σπαθ' καν - δδ Σ κουμερ - κιαρ' Θεσς - α(λο)νικις, i.e. Ἰωσὲφ (πρωτο)σπαθ(άριος) κανδ(ι)δ(ᾶτος) (καὶ) κουμερκιάρ(ιος) Θεσσαλονίκης. The combination of protospatharios with kandidatos is questionable. Possibly Α' is an error for Β' by the editor. This gives a more usual text: Ἰωσὲφ β(ασιλικὸς) σπαθ(αρο)κανδ(ι)δ(ᾶτος) καὶ κουμερκιάρ(ιος) Θεσσαλονίκης.
