Textual SourcesVita Michaelis Syncelli (BHG 1296), ed. M. Cunningham, The Life of Michael Synkellos , Belfast Byzantine Texts and Translations 1 (Belfast, 1991) (hagiography)

Iob 2 was a monk in the monastery of the Spoudaioi in Jerusalem, well attested for the severity of his religious devotions, he accompanied Michael Syncellus (Michael 51), Theodoros 68 and Theophanes 6 when they left Jerusalem en route for Constantinople and Rome: Vita Mich. Sync. 8. In Constantinople they were lodged in the monastery of the Chora, at imperial expense: Vita Mich. Sync. 9. A few days later they were summoned to an audience with the emperor, in the Chrysotriklinos, and Michael 51 stated that the purpose of their visit was to ask him to allow the display and veneration of icons: Vita Mich. Sync. 10. The patriarchal letter, addressed to the emperor Leo V (Leo 15) and the patriarch Theodotos 2, was read aloud: Vita Mich. Sync. 11. Afterwards they were imprisoned in the prison of Phiale, where they refused to eat the food sent to them because it came from heretics: Vita Mich. Sync. 12. They were visited by a man of learning (unnamed, probably Ioannes 5) sent by the emperor to change their minds but they remained obstinate: Vita Mich. Sync. 13. They were now separated; Michael 51 and Iob 2 remained in prison in the Phiale while Theodoros 68 and Theophanes 6 were exiled to the island of Aphousia (which they allegedly reached in August of the seventh indiction, i.e. August 814, wrongly): Vita Mich. Sync. 14. After six years Leo 15 died and Michael II (Michael 10) became emperor; Michael 51 and Iob 2 were then removed from the Phiale prison in Constantinople and exiled to one of the monasteries of the city of Parousias (perhaps Prousias) on Mt Olympus: Vita Mich. Sync. 15 (Michael was moved μετὰ καὶ Ἰὼβ τοῦ ὁσιωτάτου). When in the fifth year of the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5) Michael 51 was transferred back to Constantinople, to the Praitorion prison, Iob 2 went with him and continued to attend him but was not allowed to see him or to talk to him; after two years Michael 51 was moved to a better cell and, with help from Euphrosyne 1, Michael 51's attendant (presumably still Iob 2) was able to provide him with more food, drink and clothing: Vita Mich. Sync. 16. Theophilos 5 ordered that Michael 51 and Iob 2 have their necks fastened with chains and their feet made fast in wooden stocks, although they were both old and worn out by their sufferings, half-blind and bent with age; he also ordered that no-one be allowed contact with them, lest they influence them: Vita Mich. Sync. 18. Iob 2 was associated with Michael 51 in a letter of encouragement sent by Michael 51 to Theodoros 68 and Theophanes 6 after their scourging and the engraving of verses on their foreheads: Vita Mich. Sync. 24.
