Ioannes 581 was a former soldier who became a monk and suffered exile to Daphnousia under the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) for his support for the veneration of icons; he suffered severe beatings and died from the effects; he is celebrated on the same date as Stephen the Younger (Stephanos 2), i.e. 28 November; he is described as having served on embassies (ἀπὸ λεγαταρίων): Synax. Eccl. Const. 264, 7-10.
