Ioannes 496 became patriarch of Jerusalem in the fourth year of the caliph al-Mutasim 1; he was very unpopular and after four years he resigned from the see: Eutychius Alex. 1134D. He was patriarch of Jerusalem from 839 to 843; see Grumel, Chronologie, p. 452.
