Protospatharios and strategos of the Peloponnesos, Ioannes 454 was the addressee of a letter from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1) written between 859 and 861; Ioannes 454, called ὁ καλός τε καὶ ἀγαθός, is no longer what he was and still should be but has changed with approaching old age - πρὸς δυσμὰς ἐλαύνων βίου - and forgets his absent friends: Photius, Ep. 5 (I 57 Laourdas-Westerink) (addressed Ἰωάννῃ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ καὶ στρατηγῷ Πελοποννήσου). In one manuscript (MS G = Cod. Ambros. B4 sup., Gr. 81) he is called in the title ιω κοξη, i.e. Ioannes Koxes. He may therefore be identical with Ioannes 242, but this is unlikely because of his age; if the title in MS G is correct, he was presumably a relation of Ioannes 242.
