Apparently known also as Grammatikos, Ioannes 451 was the addressee of three letters from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), all written between 821 and 826; he was a learned cleric, possibly a monk, and a supporter of icons, with whom Theodoros 15 engaged in discussions on abstract philosophical and theological problems: Theod. Stud., Epp. 492, pp. 726-727; 528, p. 788; 546, pp. 825-827 (all addressed Ἰωάννῃ γραμματικῷ). He was not an intimate of Theodoros 15 but was highly regarded by him, and he proposed corrections to one of Theodoros 15's works: Theod. Stud., Ep. 492, pp. 726-727. He was an acquaintance of the Stoudite monk Platon 23: Theod. Stud., Ep. 528, p. 788. He is styled ἡ τιμιότης σου (p. 726, line 2) and τῇ ἁγιωσύνῃ σου (p. 727, line 19), Ep. 492, pp. 726-727; τὴν λογιότητά σου (p. 788, line 4), τῇ φιλότητί σου (p. 788, line 11) and τῆς ἀγχινοίας σου (p. 788, line 12), Ep. 528, p. 788; and ἡ σοφή σου τιμιότης (p. 825, line 5), Ep. 546, pp. 825-827. He is also addressed as ὦ τριπόθητε (p. 825, line 6) and ὦ τᾶν (p. 826, line 28): Ep. 546, pp. 825-827. Possibly identical with the unnamed grammatikos to whom was addressed a verse composition of Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite): Theod. Stud., Epigrammata 123 title ἐπιστολὴ πρὸς γραμματικόν.
