Ioannes 396 was a silentiarios and epi ton basilikon proseleuseon; owner of two similar seals dateable to the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 2052a and b. The name and titles read: Ἰωάννου σιλεντιαρίου καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν βασιλικῶν προσελεύσεων. He was evidently an official concerned with the organisation of imperial ceremonial; on this combination of titles, see Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 44.
