Ioannes 254 was an anagnostes; he was buried at Mesembria in Thrace, where his tombstone, dateable to the seventh or eighth century, survives: Beshevliev, Spätgr. u. spätlat. Inschr. Bulg., no. 259. The text reads: ἐνθάδε κ[ατακῖτ] - ε δοῦλο[ς Θεοῦ] - Ἰωάν[νης ἀναγ] - νόστ[ησ].
