Ioannes 243 was bishop of Rome from 872 to 882 (John VIII). In 877/878 he received Theodoros (see PBE II) as apokrisiarios sent by the patriarch Photios 1 from Constantinople shortly after Photios 1 came to the patriarchate for the second time (in 877): Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 572C (πρὸς Ἰωάννην τὸν πάπαν).
