Head of the defensores at Rome ("defensorum primus"), Ioannes 229 was one of the retinue that accompanied pope Constantine (Konstantinos 136) on his visit to Constantinople in 710 and 711: Lib. Pont. 90. 3. The party left Rome on 5 October 710, and returned to Rome on 24 October 711: Lib. Pont. 90. 3 and 7. He was presumably head of the ecclesiastical defensores of the Church of Rome.
