Ioannes 198 was basilikos protospatharios and strategos of Hellas; owner of a seal dateable to the ninth or tenth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 169, no. 12 (with facsimile) (tenth century) = Konstantopoulos, JIAN 5, 46 (ninth or tenth century). Obv.: patriarchal cross on four steps with the invocative formula Κύριε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ. Rev.: +Ιωαν - νη β(ασιλικῷ) (πρωτο)σπ - αθαρ(ίῳ) (καὶ) στρ - ατιγ(ῷ) Ἑλ - λαδο(ς). Not to be identified with the patrikios and strategos of Hellas Ioannes 242; cf. Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 95 (opposing Bees, VV 21 (1914), 203f.).
