Ioannes 189 was archbishop of Calabria; owner of a seal dateable to the second half of the ninth century: Laurent, Corpus V 1, no. 910 = Schlumberger, Sig., p. 231 and Salinas, "Piombi antichi", p. 412 (two identical specimens) . Obv.: Virgin and Child, with the invocative monogram Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ. Rev.: +Ἰωάν - νῃ ἀρχιεπ - [ι]σκόπῳ Κα - λαυρία(ς). Laurent proposed a date after Leontios 14 (attested in 869/870) and before the restoration of Photios (in 877); see Laurent, op. cit., p. 716, note.
