Ioannes 171 was a basilikos spatharios; owner of a seal dateable to the iconoclast period (VIII/M IX): Ebersolt, "Sceaux byzantins", p. 399, no. 510. Obv.: cruciform invocative monogram in the name of the Virgin. Rev.: Ἰωάννης βασιλικὸς σπαθάριος. Possibly identical with Ioannes basilikos spatharios who owned a seal dateable between the mid eighth century and the mid ninth: Zacos and Veglery 2055. The name and title read: Ἰωάννῃ βασιλικῷ σπαθαρίῳ.
