Ioannes 149 was archbishop of Thessalonike; owner of seals dateable to the ninth or tenth century: DOSeals I 18.84. Obv.: Virgin and Child, and St Demetrios, with the legends Μ(ήτηρ) Θ(εοῦ), [(ἅγιος )] Διμ(ήτριος) and Θ(εοτό)κε βοήθ(ει) [τῷ σῷ δούλῳ]. Rev.: Ἰωάννῃ ἀρχιε[πι]σκόπῳ [Θε]σσαλονίκης. A similar specimen, possibly from the same boulloterion, is Schlumberger, Sig., p. 106, no. 3 = Laurent, Corpus V 1, no. 452. Obv.: Virgin and Child and St Demetrios, with the legends Μα(ρία) or Μ(ήτηρ) Θ(εοῦ), [(ἅγιος )] Διμ(ήτριος) and Θ(εοτό)κε βοήθ(ει) [τῷ σῷ δούλῳ]. Rev.: Ἰωάννῃ ἀρχιε[π]ισκόπῳ [Θ]εσσαλονίκης. In their note in DOSeals, p. 80, Nesbitt and Oikonomides note two archbishops of Thessalonike called Ioannes around the turn of the tenth century, one in 892, the other (or the same?) in 904 (see Gouillard, "Synodikon", 114; J.-M. Spieser, "Inscriptions de Thessalonique", TM 5 (1973), pp. 162-163; they will appear in PBE II).
