Ioannes 139 was a deacon of the Great Church (Hagia Sophia) of Constantinople and cancellarius; in 787 he was present at the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and is attested at the sixth session, on 6 October 787, when he was one of the readers: Mansi XIII 204 (Ἰωάννης διάκονος καὶ σακελλάριος (sic); the Latin version, at XIII 203, calls him "Ioannes Deo amabilis diaconus sanctissimae magnae ecclesiae Constantinopoleos et cancellarius"), XIII 208 (Ἰωάννης διάκονος τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ μεγάλης ἐκκλησίας), XIII 209 (Ἰωάννης ὁ θεοφιλέστατος διάκονος).
