Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Ioannes 115 was a priest; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) as representative of the bishop of Koloneia in Armenia Secunda, Niketas 26; he is attested at the fourth and seventh sessions, on 1 October and 13 October 787, and possibly at the second, on 26 September (see below); he may therefore have attended the last seven sessions of the Council, from 26 September to 23 November 787 (he is not attested at the first session): Mansi XII 1110-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Ἰωάννου πρεσβυτέρου καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ Κολωνείας: Mansi XIII 368. Elsewhere he is styled Ἰωάννης πρεσβύτερος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου Νικήτα ἐπισκόπου Κολωνείας, Mansi XIII 141; and Ἰωάννης ἀνάξιος πρεσβύτερος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ θρόνου Κολωνείας, Mansi XIII 385. In the list of names from the second session there are the words ... καὶ ἐκ προσώπου Κολωνείας: Mansi XII 1110 (the Latin version, at XII 1109, also reads: ..."ex persona Coloniae"). The name of Ioannes should probably be restored (i.e. Ἰωάννης πρεσβύτερος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου Κολωνείας), though some sees were represented in this fashion by different individuals at different sessions. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 141. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 385.
