Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Ioannes 110 was bishop of Mindos in Caria; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Μίνδου: Mansi XII 998. His name appears in the list of those present at the seventh session, but with the wrong see, reading Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Σταδείας: Mansi XIII 372. His see and the name of the next bishop in the list (Staurakios 7) have been omitted. The Latin version, at XIII 371, preserves the correct version, and reads: "Ioanne episcopo Mindi, Stauracio episcopo Stadiensium". The text at XIII 372 should therefore be corrected to read: Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Μίνδου, Σταυρακίου ἐπισκόπου Σταδείας. Elsewhere he is styled Ἰωάννης ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Μίνδου or similar: Mansi XII 1106 (Μύβδου; the Latin version, at XII 1105, reads: "Mydbi"), XIII 148 (Μύβδου; the Latin version, at XIII 147, reads: "Mybdi"), XIII 393 (πόλεως Μίνδου; the Latin version, at XIII 394, reads: "civitatis Mindi"). At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1106. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 148. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 393.
