Ioannes 108 was bishop of Herakleia Pontou in Honorias; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Ἡρακλείας Πόντου: Mansi XII 998. In the list of those present at the seventh session his name is missing from the Greek list but survives in the Latin version, where he is styled "Ioanne episcopo Heracliae Ponti": Mansi XIII 370 (for the omission of his name from the Greek, see Theophilos 11). Elsewhere he is styled Ἰωάννης ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Ἡρακλείας Πόντου or similar: Mansi XII 1103, XIII 145 (Ἡρακλείας), XIII 391 (the Latin version has "Ioannes indignus episcopus Heracliae Ponti"; the name is missing from the Greek version at XIII 392). At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1103. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 145. At the seventh session he subscribed the statements of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 391.
