Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Ioannes 85 was bishop of Trokalis (Trecalae, Tricola, in Sicily); in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 994-XIII 486. In the lists of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Τροκάλεως (so XII 994; XIII 365 calls his see Τρεοκάλεως): Mansi XII 994, XIII 365. Elsewhere he is styled Ἰωάννης ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος Τρεοκάλεως: Mansi XIII 140, 384. His name is missing from the list of those who spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons at the second session. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 140. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 384. The omission of Ioannes 85 and Theophanes 8 (they are named together in the list on XII 994) from those at the second session is perhaps a manuscript error.
