Ioannes 58 was bishop of the island of Karpathos; in 681 he subscribed the statement of the faith condemning monotheletism, which was produced by the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council); he is not attested as present at any of the eighteen sessions but his signature appears with those of eight other bishops at the end of the list of those who subscribed; he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Καρπαθίων νήσου: Riedinger II 2. 696, line 19, cf. II 2. 894, line 7 (= Mansi XI 653, cf. XI 693). The old Latin version printed in Riedinger II 2. 797, line 19 (= Mansi XI 654), calls his see "Carpathi insulae". He was among the signatories to the copy of the definition of the faith sent to the bishop of Rome, Agatho 1: Riedinger II 2. 894, line 7 (= Mansi XI 693).
