Ioannes 56 was bishop of Korykos in Cilicia Prima; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 16 September): Riedinger II 2. 692-828 (= Mansi XI 616-680). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Κωρύκου: Riedinger II 2. 794, line 21, 828, line 24 (= Mansi XI 653, 680). In the old Latin versions printed in Riedinger II 2. 795, line 23 (= Mansi XI 654) his see is called "ciuitatis Corici". In the lists of those present at each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Κωρύκου: Riedinger II 2. 692, line 27, 764, line 7 (= Mansi XI 616, 629). Still bishop in 692, he attended the Quinisext Council in Constantinople and signed the canons: Ohme, Bischofsliste, p. 158, no. 119 (= Mansi XI 997) (Ἰωάννης ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος Κωρύκου τῆς πόλεως τῶν Κιλίκων ἐπαρχίας).
