Ioannes 55 was bishop of Komana in Pontus Polemoniacus (see below); in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 16 September): Riedinger II 2. 690-827 (= Mansi XI 616-678). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος Κομανῶν: Riedinger II 2. 792, line 24 (= Mansi XI 652). In the signatures to the Council he is styled Ἰωάννης ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος Κομάνων Ἀρμενίας δευτέρας: Riedinger II 2. 827, line 26 (= Mansi XI 677). The old Latin version printed in Riedinger II 2. 793, line 26, calls his see "ciuitatis Comanae". In the lists of those present at each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Κομάνων: Riedinger II 2. 690, line 32, 762, line 9 (= Mansi XI 616, 629). He is named in a group with other bishops from Pontus Polemoniacus in the lists at Riedinger II 2. 690, 762 and 792 (= Mansi XI 616, 629 and 652); in the list at Riedinger II 2. 827 (= Mansi XI 677) their names are scattered. His see is therefore to be identified with Comana Pontica rather than Comana Chryse in Cappadocia. The reference to Armenia Secunda is due to the fact that when Justinian I reorganised the provinces of eastern Anatolia Komana was included in the new province of Armenia Secunda; cf. Justinian, Novellae, ed. R. Schoell and W. Kroll, in Corpus Iuris Civilis III, no. 31, and see Ramsay, Historical Geography, pp. 324-326.
