Ioannes 51 was bishop of Saittai (Sitai) in Lydia; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 16 September): Riedinger II 2. 690-827 (= Mansi XI 616-678). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος Σίτων πόλεως ἐπαρχίας Λυδίας (at Riedinger II 2. 827, line 20 (= Mansi XI 677) the words ἐπαρχίας Λυδίας are omitted): Riedinger II 2. 790, line 11, 827, line 20 (= Mansi XI 649, 677). The old Latin version printed in Riedinger II 2. 791, line 13, calls his see "ciuitatis Sitorum Lidiae regionis" (the Mansi version at XI 678 wrongly calling the province "Lyciae"). In the lists of those attending each session he is called Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Σίτων: Riedinger II 2. 690, line 2, 760, line 11 (= Mansi XI 616, 628). Still bishop of Saittai in 692, he attended the Quinisext Council in Constantinople and signed the canons: Ohme, Bischofsliste, p. 155, no. 93 (= Mansi XI 996) (Ἰωάννης ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Σεττῶν τῆς Λυδῶν ἐπαρχίας).
