Ioannes 48 was bishop of Athens; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 16 September 681); he also acted as one of the representatives of the Roman council of 680: Riedinger II 2. 688-824 (= Mansi XI 613-674). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος Ἀθηνῶν καὶ ληγάτος τῆς ἁγίας συνόδου τοῦ ἀποστολικοῦ θρόνου τῆς πρεσβυτέρας Ῥώμης (at Riedinger II 2. 824, lines 30-31 (= Mansi XI 672-673) the words τῆς ἁγίας συνόδου are missing, probably in error since the Latin version in Mansi, see below, preserves them): Riedinger II 2. 784, lines 15-16, 824, lines 30-31 (= Mansi XI 644, 672-673).
