Ioannes 46 was bishop of Herakleiopolis (also called Pidachthoe) in Armenia Secunda; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 16 September): Riedinger II 2. 686-825 (= Mansi XI 613-674). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled The old Latin version printed in Riedinger II 2. 789, line 15, calls his see "Haeracleopolitane ciuitatis secundae Armeniae regionis". In the lists of those present at each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Ἡρακλειουπόλεως ἤτοι Πιδαχθόης: Riedinger II 2. 686, line 30, 758, line 4 (= Mansi XI 613, 628). He was among the signatories to the copy of the definition of the faith sent to the bishop of Rome, Agatho 1: Riedinger II 2. 894, lines 8-9 (= Mansi XI 693).

Probably identical with Ioannes, archbishop of Pidachthoe, owner of a seal dateable to the seventh century: Laurent, Corpus V 1, no. 851. Obv.: image of St Anthimos with the invocative formula Δός, ἅγιε Ἄνθ[ι]μ[ε, τὴν σὴν χάριν](?). Rev.: [+][Ι]ωαν - [νη α]ρχηε - [πι]σκοπο - [Πη]δαχ - [θ]οη[σ]. The name may be Michael but, according to Laurent, the traces best fit the name Ioannes. On the image, the name and the date, see Laurent, op. cit., p. 661, note.
