Ioannes 42 was bishop of Miletopolis in Hellespontos; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at seven of the last eight sessions (sessions eleven to eighteen, from 20 March to 16 September; he missed session seventeen): Riedinger II 2. 406-826 (= Mansi XI 460-676). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Μιλητουπολιτῶν πόλεως τῆς Ἑλλησποντίων ἐπαρχίας (Riedinger II 2. 826, line 22 (= Mansi XI 676) reads: ἐπίσκοπος Μιλητουπόλεως Ἑλλησπόντου): Riedinger II 2. 788, line 28, 826, line 22 (= Mansi XI 648, 676). In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Μιλητουπόλεως: Riedinger II 2. 406, line 2, 518, line 24, etc. (= Mansi XI 460, 521, etc.).
