Ioannes 38 was bishop of Eriza in Caria; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at nine of the last ten sessions (from the ninth to the eighteenth, 8 March to 16 September 681, apparently omitting the tenth, where his name does not occur in either the Greek or the Latin list of those attending): Riedinger II 2. 266-828 (= Mansi XI 380-680). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Ἐρίζων: Riedinger II 2. 794, line 2 (= Mansi XI 652). In the subscriptions to the Council he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος Ἐρίζων τῆς Καρῶν ἐπαρχίας: Riedinger II 2. 828, line 3 (= Mansi XI 680). The old Latin versions of both passages printed in Mansi call his see "civitatis Erizorum Cariae provinciae": Mansi XI 651, 679. The Riedinger version, however, calls his see "ciuitatis Erizorum" only: Riedinger II 2. 795, line 3. In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Ἐρίζων: Riedinger II 2. 266, line 11, etc. (= Mansi XI 380, etc.). His name is given as Georgios in the Greek list of the Mansi version, at XI 459-460, of those at the eleventh session, but Ioannes in the Latin.
