Ioannes 36 was bishop of Lappa in Crete; he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) in 680 and 681 and was present at all eighteen sessions: Riedinger II 2. 18-825 (= Mansi XI 212-673). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Λάππης τῆς Κρητῶν νήσου: Riedinger II 2. 785, line 26 (= Mansi XI 645). In the subscriptions to the Council he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Λαμπέων πόλεως τῆς Κρητῶν νήσου: Riedinger II 2. 825, line 17 (= Mansi XI 673). In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Λάππης: Riedinger II 2. 18, line 16, 30, line 18, etc. (= Mansi XI 212, 220, etc.).
