Ioannes 33 was bishop of Chalcedon in Bithynia; he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) in 680 and 681 and was present at all eighteen sessions: Riedinger II 2. 16-823 (= Mansi XI 209-669). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Ἰωάννης ἐλάχιστος (so Riedinger II 2. 823, lines 19-20 (= Mansi 669) reads ἐλέει Θεοῦ) ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Χαλκηδονέων μητροπόλεως τῆς Βιθυνῶν ἐπαρχίας: Riedinger II 2. 780, lines 23-24, 823, lines 19-20, cf. II 2. 892, line 11 (= Mansi XI 641, 669, cf. XI 689). In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Χαλκηδόνος: Riedinger II 2. 16, line 26, 28, line 30, etc. (= Mansi XI 209, 220, etc.). At the eighth session (7 March 681) he declared his acceptance of the doctrine of Two Wills and Two Energies as set out in documents from the pope and the Roman Council: Riedinger II 2. 198, lines 12-19 (= Mansi XI 337) (styled ἐπίσκοπος Χαλκηδόνος). He was among the signatories to the copy of the definition of the faith sent to the bishop of Rome, Agatho 1: Riedinger II 2. 892, line 11 (= Mansi XI 689). Still bishop of Chalcedon, in 692 he attended the Quinisext Council at Constantinople where he signed the canons: Ohme, Bischofsliste, p. 147, no. 20 (= Mansi XI 989) (Ἰωάννης ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Χαλκηδονέων μητροπόλεως τῆς Βιθυνῶν ἐπαρχίας).
