Hildegard 1 was the wife of Charlemagne (Karoulos 1); summoned by him with their sons to join him in Italy during the siege of Ticinum (Pavia): Lib. Pont. 97. 34. The siege began in October 773 and Karoulos 1 left in March 774; see Duchesne, Lib. Pont., p. 516, n. 27. The wife of Karoulos 1, Hildegard 1 died on 30 April 783: Annales Einhard. s.a. 783, Annales Laurissenses Maiores s.a. 783.
