Herfemar 1 was a Lombard; he was one of the followers of the Lombard dux of Forum Iulii, Pemmo 1; when most of Pemmo 1's followers were arrested and imprisoned by Liutprand 1, he escaped with many of his men and took refuge in the Church of the archangel Michael (at Ticinum); he received a pardon from the king and remained unpunished, while Pemmo 1's other followers spent a long time in chains: Paul.
