Hadrianos 9 was an abbot (abbas); described as a man equally as learned as the archbishop Theodoros (Theodoros 50) ("vir aeque doctissimus"); Hadrianos 9 and Theodoros 50 were sent by pope Vitalian (Bitalianos 3) to Britain, during the reign of the emperor Constans II (Konstans 1), to strengthen the church there: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 30, cf. Bede, Hist. Eccl. IV 1ff. The date was therefore between 657 and 668.
