Gregorios 9's death at the hands of the Arouritai is recorded by Theophanes in a brief notice which otherwise records only the triumph of the caliph Marwan II (Marwan 2): Theoph. AM 6239 ("in this year Gregorios is killed by the Arouritai, and Marouam, the ruler of the Arabs, was victorious, as I have already mentioned"). The Arouritai was a group among the Arabs (cf. Theoph. AM 6236, p. 421, line 18, and see al-Dahhak 1) but their precise identity and location are as obscure from Theophanes as are those of Gregorios 9. The year was probably 748.
