Gerontianos 1 was a man of high birth and riches; he had a beautiful daughter (καλὴ τῷ εἴδει) who was one of the girls chosen for the bride show of Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) in 788; she allegedly boasted of her chances, confidant of success, but after the interviews was rejected, given presents and sent home: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, pp. 141, 143. The story as told clearly contrasts the arrogance of the rich girl with the humility and poverty of the eventual winner, Maria 2.
