Seal SourcesZacos, G. and Veglery, A., Byzantine Lead Seals, vol. I (in 3 parts) (Basel, 1972).

Georgios 196 was hypatos and komes of Abydos and of Hieron; owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 1333. Obv.: bust of Virgin, with Child; on left, cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε; on right, cruciform monogram of βοήθει; underneath, the legend Γεωργιω - υπατω. Rev.: και κομ - ιτος Αβ - υδου και τ - ου Ιερ[ου]. The name and titles read: Γεωργίῳ ὑπάτῳ καὶ κόμιτος (sic) Ἀβύδου καὶ τοῦ Ἱεροῦ. This seal is so similar to Zacos and Veglery 1334 that their owners were very probably one and the same person. Hypatos and eparchos of Rome (meaning Constantinople); owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 1334. The obverse is virtually identical with that on Zacos and Veglery 1333 (see above). Rev.: και ε - παρχω Ρ - ωμης. The name and titles read: Γεωργίῳ ὑπάτῳ καὶ ἐπάρχῳ Ῥώμης. Presumably Georgios hypatos once held office as komes of Abydos and Hieron and later in his career became eparchos of the Polis.
