Protoasekretis, Georgios 130 was sent with Ioannes 235 by the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) as envoy to the Frankish king Pippinus (Pepin 1) ("imperiales missi, Georgius scilicet proto a secreta et Iohannis silentiarius, directi ad praedictum Francorum regem"); on arrival in Rome they were told by the pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) that Pepin 1 was marching against the Lombards, but refused to believe it; Stephanos 8 sent them on to Marseilles (Maxilia) in Francia, accompanied by his own envoy (Anonymus 252), where they learnt that Pepin 1 had already entered Lombard territory: Lib. Pont. 94. 43. Distressed at this news, the imperial envoys tried to prevent the papal envoy from proceeding to meet Pepin 1; when they failed, Georgios 130 went on in advance and met Pepin 1 in Lombard territory close to Pavia and promised him many gifts from the emperor if he would restore Ravenna and the other cities and forts of the exarchate to imperial rule: Lib. Pont. 94. 44. Pepin 1 refused absolutely, insisting that they all belonged to the jurisdiction of the see of St Peter and the Roman church, and he dismissed Georgios 130, sending him back to Rome by another route: Lib. Pont. 94. 45. They probably arrived in Rome in spring 756. See Rochow, Konstantin V, pp. 215-216.
