Gauderichos 1 was bishop of Velitrae in Italy, he was the addressee of a letter from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1) in March/April 880; Photios 1 sent him a gift and sought a reconciliation and an end to their old enmity: Photius, Ep. 273 (addressed Γαυδερίχῳ ἐπισκόπῳ Βελιτέρνας Ῥωμαίων). The bishop of Velitrae, he was sent into exile by the emperor as a result of false accusations, but returned to his see at the start of the pontificate of Hadrian II (Hadrianos 8) (in 868; he was therefore bishop under pope Nikolaos 28, before 867): cf. Mansi XVI 130ff. In June 869 he took part in the Council at Rome which condemned Photios 1; he was a spokesman for the bishops summoned to Rome by pope Hadrian II (Hadrianos 8): Mansi XVI 124A-125C. In 879 at the later Council of Rome he signed the commonitorium supporting the restoration of Photios 1: Mansi XVIIA 362D, 473, 474C, MGH, Epp. VII, p. 189. He was the addressee of a letter from Anastasius (Bibliothecarius): MGH, Epp. VII, p. 437. Author of a work on the Translation of St Clemens: AASS March II, p. 9, lines 19-22. See further in PBE II.
