Eumathios 1 was a spatharios; he was a skilled engineer (Εὐμάθιος ὁ σπαθάριος μηχανικῆς ἔμπειρος); he escaped with other officers (ἄρχουσιν) after the capture of Serdika by the Bulgars in 809 and was among those who, when the emperor Nicephorus I (Nikephoros 8) refused to give the escapees promises of safety, deserted to join the Bulgars: Theoph.
