Eugenios 7 was pope Eugenius II, bishop of Rome from 824 to 827. Described as a man of great simplicity and humility, very learned, eloquent, handsome and generous: Lib. Pont. 101. 1. He was a priest of the titulus of St Sabina and became archpriest of Rome ("archipresbyter ... huius sacratissimae atque universalis ecclesiae") before his election as bishop of Rome after the death of pope Paschalis (Paschalis 5): Lib. Pont. 101. 2-3, cf. Annales Einhard. a. 824 (the election was contested after the death of Paschalis, but "Eugenius tamen, archipresbiter tituli sanctae Sabinae, vincente nobilium parte, subrogatus atque ordinatus est"). Under him Roman exiles in Francia were allowed to return; they were either restored to their family estates or received support from Eugenios: Lib. Pont. 101. 3. This papal biography is sketchy and incomplete. Cf. also the Life of Wala by Paschasius Ratbertus, PL 120, p. 1604, for the circumstances of the election. Eugenios was succeeded by Valentinus 4.
