Eugenios 5 was the bishop of Rome (pope Eugenius I) from 10 August 654 to 2 June 657. He was a native of Rome, from the first region, the Aventine; he was the son of Rufinianus (Rouphinianos 1); he was a cleric from infancy: Lib. Pont. 77. 1 ("natione Romanus, de regione prima Aventinense, clericus a cunabulis, ex patre Rufiniano"). He succeeded Martinus (Martinos 6) as bishop of Rome in 654. He remained bishop for two years nine months twenty-four days: Lib. Pont. 77. 1. He refused to accept the synodical letter sent to him by the patriarch of Constantinople, Petros 2, following pressure from the clergy and people, because it failed to clarify the patriarch's attitude towards monotheletism and monenergism: Lib. Pont. 77. 2. He was buried at St Peter's, on 10 June: Lib. Pont. 77. 3. He is described as a gentle and kindly man, friendly and of saintly character, who ensured that salaries and charitable gifts were paid on a regular basis: Lib. Pont. 77. 1 ("benignus, mitis, mansuetus, omnibus affabilis et sanctitatis praeclarior").
