Esages 1 was basilikos spatharokandidatos and archon of the Bichetoi; owner of two similar seals dateable to the second half of the ninth century: Zacos and Veglery 1877a and b. The name and titles read: Ἐσάγῃ βασιλικῷ σπαθαροκανδιδάτῳ καὶ ἄρχοντι Βιχητῶν(?). The Bichetoi were perhaps a people living somewhere in Hellas or on the fringes of the empire. The name does not appear in H. Ditten, Ethnische Verschiebungen zwischen der Balkanhalbinsel und Kleinasien vom Ende des 6. bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 9. Jahrhunderts, Berliner Byzantinische Arbeiten 59 (Berlin, 1993).
